Many MATESOL and MATFL graduates assume positions of responsibility extending far beyond their academic preparation as classroom teachers. Such jobs typically involve teacher training and supervision, program evaluation, directing or coordinating programs, and various other administrative responsibilities.
In 1993, to better prepare graduates for managerial positions in language programs and schools, GSLEL launched the "first of its kind" certificate in Language Program Administration to accompany their MA in TESOL or TFL. In addition to the teacher education, teacher supervision and program administration courses offered through GSLEL, the certificate program also draws upon the MBA and MPA degree programs, to offer course work in marketing, accounting, budgeting, and management. This interdisciplinary approach allows faculty to work across disciplines to integrate the non-teaching components with the needs of future language program administrators.
Students choose to pursue the LPA for many reasons, depending on their individual goals, but whether it is a fast-track to administrative positions, the basis for entrepreneurial efforts, or a foundation for academic leadership, it is valuable preparation for a long-term career in the language teaching profession.
