Presentation Skills This course will give you practice in delivering speeches in English. You will learn how to give impromptu speeches using effective body language, articulation and projection. You will learn how to provide constructive feedback on your own speeches and those of your classmates, as well as how to conduct a question-and-answer period at the end of a speech.
Pronouncing American English In this course you will improve both your understanding of and your pronunciation of American English. Particular focus will be placed on sentence stress, word stress, intonation and reductions. You will critique your own production, and work on specific areas of difficulty. Tongue twisters will be a regular part of this course.
Current Events Content Course This class will focus on recent political and social issues that affect the US and its relationship with the world. You will use different forms of media such as newspapers, magazines, TV and the Internet to collect information that will give you a broad view of current events. You will then bring that information to class through group presentations, discussions and other projects.
Community Language Skills This course will give you practice in communicating effectively in realistic situations, as well as introduce you to relevant cultural and social information. You will learn how language is used in different social situations, and discuss troublesome communication situations.
US Culture Content Course In this course you will reflect on your experience in the United States in a variety of ways. You will identify cultural similarities and differences between Japan and the US, and discuss cross-cultural issues. You will also examine your home-stay experience, and the pre-existing beliefs that you had about American life. In all of these activities, you will be developing your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.
Panel Discussion: An American Life Forum In this course you will first prepare for interactions with community members related to a particular aspect of American life and culture. During the panel discussions, you will have opportunities to ask questions and discuss the week’s panel topic. Last, you will reflect on what you learned from the panelists and your interaction with them. This class will not only allow you to learn about different parts of American life and culture, but will also develop your listening comprehension, critical thinking and vocabulary skills.
