Graduate Study Preparation The 6-week Summer Intensive English Preparation for Translation & Interpretation (EPTI) program provides advanced language enhancement courses in English translation and interpretation for language professionals and students who have been admitted to the Graduate School of Translation & Interpretation (GSTI). The goals are to increase both participants' fluency and accuracy in English and to prepare them for the intense linguistic requirements of the GSTI degree programs. If a student has not been admitted to GSTI, completion of the summer course does not guarantee admission to GSTI.
Professionals and Language Instructors Although primarily designed for students admitted to GSTI, this program is also ideal for language professionals and language instructors who want to consolidate their second- or third-language skills at an intensive, advanced level.
This unique, intensive program is designed to fill the gap between traditional language instruction for communicative purposes and language instruction specific to the needs of students of translation and interpretation.
Courses offer extensive practice in:
- Text analysis
- Oral and written summarizing and paraphrasing
- Idiomatic vocabulary and glossary development
- Public speaking, debate, accent reduction, and cultural enhancement
All course work is conducted strictly in English at an advanced level and is based upon authentic materials extracted from newspapers, journals, magazines, broadcasted speeches, films and videos, or provided by guest speakers. Topics are selected for their relevance to culture and the translation and interpretation professions.
Classes meet five days a week for 4.5 hours a day. Because of the intensive nature of the program, class sizes are small (10-12 students). Students will be divided into two or three different levels, determined by a placement test upon arrival. The program is demanding and requires at least three or four hours of homework per night. It is geared towards students with high motivation, self-discipline and good study habits.
Excursions expose students to the language characteristic of the thematic units covered in the classes. Past trips have included the Monterey County Courthouse, a local winery, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, local software companies, and Language Line Services. Guest speakers from different professions are invited to address summer students.
