Language Prerequisites by Graduate Program

Advanced language skills in a second language are required for most graduate programs. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum language requirements in one of our core languages or in an approved non-core language. Proficiency may be documented, for all languages except English, with official transcripts or explained in the application for admission. Required skills include reading, writing, speaking and listening. Core languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Japanese, Korean (Translation and Interpretation only), Russian, and Spanish.

Non-core languages may be studied if permission is granted by the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics (email languages@miis.edu or call 831-647-4185). An additional fee will be charged each semester of study for a non-core language. (Non-core languages cannot be approved for Translation and Interpretation programs.)

Non-native Speakers of English must submit an official TOEFL or IELTS score report. Applicants who are not certain whether they are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score report should contact the Admissions Office to discuss their language background.

GRADUATE SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL POLICY STUDIES (GSIPS)

All of the Master of Arts programs in GSIPS have the same language prerequisites.

Language Requirement for Native Speakers of English

Minimum Language Requirements
Two years of recent successful college-level language or the equivalent (except for Arabic)
Arabic: 1 year for fall entry (1 ½ years for spring entry) of recent successful college-level language or the equivalent

Evaluating your Language Skills
To help evaluate language skills (other than English or Arabic), students may download a Diagnostic Language Test from our website (www.miis.edu/languages.html). The test is self-administered and will help you evaluate your level of language proficiency in reading and writing your chosen language. Please note that admitted students will be required to demonstrate advanced reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension skills in their language of study during New Student Orientation. Since only advanced language courses (3rd and 4th year college level) are offered during the academic year, students who do not have the minimum level of proficiency are strongly encouraged to consider beginning their studies by enrolling in an intensive language program at the Institute or at Middlebury College in order to bring their language skills up to the appropriate level.

Language Requirement for Non-native Speakers of English
It is presumed that non-native speakers of English will study English as their second language. Non-native speakers of English are required to provide proof of English proficiency by submitting scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS examinations.

  • TOEFL minimums: 550 (paper) 213 (computer) 80 (internet)
  • IELTS minimums: 6.5 overall score with no sub-score below 6.0 on the Academic module

Applicants who wish to study a language other than English must submit a higher TOEFL or IELTS score report and submit an official college/university transcript showing two years of recent successful language training in their proposed language of study.

  • TOEFL minimums: 620 (paper) 260 (computer) 105 (internet)
  • IELTS minimums: 7.5 overall score with no sub-score below 7.0 on the Academic module
  • Non-native speakers of English who obtain a bachelor’s degree at an accredited US college/university may have the TOEFL or IELTS exams requirement waived for admission; however, they will still be required to take the English Language Proficiency Exam during New Student Orientation. Waiver requests should be made to the Admissions Office.
