Admissions & Application Process

The Monterey Institute’s Winter Intensive Language Program admits students on an on-going basis. The application deadline for the winter program is November 16, 2008. Late applicants for programs that have been confirmed will be placed on a waiting list and will be added on a first-come, first-served basis. All applications have to be accompanied by a non-refundable $50 application fee and a non-refundable $200 tuition deposit - transcripts and letters of recommendation are not required. Students who are also applying for graduate study at the Monterey Institute have to pay the application fee only once, but must submit a separate SILP application.

Our intensive program generally requires that students be at least 18 years of age. The Winter Intensive Language Program will occasionally admit students between the ages of 16 to 18. Participants under the age of 18 must provide proof that they are in custody of a legal guardian living in the local area. Under-age participants are also required to submit two letters of recommendation from teachers or advisors that attest to their fitness for intensive language study. The demanding nature of our language programs requires students’ full commitment and we strongly discourage participants from working or taking other classes during the course of the program.

Final placement in a particular level of language study is determined by performance on an oral  and written placement evaluation administered by the program coordinator before the start of classes. Only applicants for intermediate level WILP classes are being evaluated. By applying for admission, the student indicates acceptance of the placement deemed appropriate by the intensive language program faculty.

Deferral

Applicants to the winter intensive language programs may defer their application for up to one year after their original application was received. To defer to the following year’s summer or winter program, please contact the Intensive Language Studies Department at 831-647-4115 or at wilp@miis.edu. Deferral is not automatic and has to be requested by the student.
